COOS BAY — Maddy Melbrech proved unbeatable for the second straight year for long-range shooting at the Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The Junction City senior repeated as champion of the 3-point shootout and immediately gave credit to a pair of teammates for helping her to beat four foes during the week.

“Shout out to my rebounders, Kamryn Potter and Mariah Ohman,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without them.”

For a while, it looked like Mehlbrech might be going against a teammate in the final as she and Alexa Norris rolled through their first three rounds.

But after Mehlbrech beat Coquille’s McKenna Wilson 12-8 in her semifinal match, Norris fell to Lynden Harry of Madras in a match that went to overtime.

In the final, Mehlbrech beat Harry 13-10.

“I was just getting into the rhythm,” Mehlbrech said, adding that she felt a little pressure to repeat as champion, not that it was necessarily a bad thing.

“Usually, I work well under pressure,” she said.

While Mehlbrech repeated as champion, Marshfield’s Grant Woolsey became a first-time winner in the boys competition after reaching the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion last year.

The most distinguished thing about Woolsey, and his two rebounders, was that they all wore Birkenstocks for the semifinals and finals, their footwear of choice after Marshfield's victory over Junction City earlier in the evening.

“I told myself it was the Berks tonight,” Woolsey said.

Woolsey beat North Bend’s Jayden Frank 13-10 in the semifinals and then beat Trevor Daniels of Sutherlin 12-8 in the final.

Daniels had to work overtime while beating both Coquille’s Michael Luna in the quarterfinals and Junction City’s Trae Knabe in the semifinals.

Like Mehlbrech, though, Woolsey should get a chance to defend his title, since he’s only a junior.
