A memorial service for Patricia Whalen-Flanders, 74, of Coquille, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 282 W. Sixth St., in Coquille, with pastor Aaron Finley presiding. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.
Pat was born and raised in Berkeley, Calif. As a youth she knew she wanted to be a nurse. After graduating from high school she attended college, receiving a degree in nursing and started a career devoted to health care.
One of Pat's proudest moments was the birth of her son, Donald. After his birth she married Jim Emerick and together they adopted a daughter, Tracy, later moving to Brookings where they raised both of her children and later divorced.
Pat continued working as a nurse for several different doctors and at the Good Sam Convalescent Home, serving as the director of nursing. A few years later she took a job with the school district as a school nurse.
In 1994 Pat met Leroy Flanders and together they moved to Hawaii where they were later married. In 2000 Pat and Lee moved back to Oregon settling in Coquille where they adopted Aaron, Morgan, and Shayla. In 2004 Lee suffered a stroke; Pat was there by his side giving him the care he needed until recently when they were forced to put Lee in assisted living.
Patricia was a caring person who focused her life on helping others. She was dear to so many and will be missed.
Patricia is survived by husband, Leroy; son, Donald Young; daughters, Tracy Emerick, Jennifer McGhan and husband, Wes; grandchildren, Morgan Flanders, Aaron Flanders, Shayla Flanders, Caitlyn McGhan, Jordan McGhan, J.J. McGhan, and Stephen McGahn; and brother, Mike Whalen.
