NORTH BEND — The red star is setting on southwestern Oregon.

Macy's stores at Pony Village Mall in North Bend and Roseburg Valley Mall in Roseburg will close this spring, along with 34 other Macy's that had "disappointing" 2015 sales, according to a Jan. 6 news release from the company.

The company had already closed four stores in 2015, leaving it with about 770 Macy's and Bloomingdales stores.

The shuttered stores are "unproductive or no longer robust shopping destinations because of changes in the local retail shopping landscape," said the announcement.

Company spokesperson Betsy Nelson said Wednesday afternoon that no firm date had yet been set for the closure of the North Bend location. The news release said, "Final clearance sales at the following Macy’s stores closing in early 2016 will begin on Monday, Jan. 11 and run for between eight to 12 weeks (with the exception of Westfield Century City, North DeKalb Mall and Roseburg Valley Mall, where final clearance sales are already in progress)."

The Pony Village store, which opened in 1980, employed 54 people. At 41,000 square feet, it was one of the smallest Macy's stores, similar in size to the Roseburg Valley Mall location, which also opened in 1980 and had 59 employees.

Macy's still has stores along the I-5 corridor in Medford, Eugene and Salem, plus one in Bend and several in Portland and its suburbs.

The company plans to open three new Macy's and two Bloomingdales stores in Hawaii, Los Angeles, Utah, San Jose and Connecticut, plus two in Abu Dhabi.
