The Coquille varsity chess team reclaimed victory over the weekend at the Oregon 3A state championship. Seventeen players traveled to LaSalle Prep High School in Portland to participate.

Coquille had been the 3A champions for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Having lost the past two years, the team was happy to reclaim their status as 3A varsity champions for 2013.  Aaron Grabinsky, Jessi Ross, Hailey Riley and Kaitlyn Davidson won most valuable 3A player for their board positions. The junior varsity team also took first-place  honors, although they lost the overall champion status they had previously held the last two years.

A new division had been initiated in the championships this year for a middle school section. Coquille had two of their best middle school players on the junior varsity team, but brought seven players to play in the new section. Coquille Middle school was unable to win any rounds but the players had a great opportunity to explore their chess skills and build up motivation for next year. Team members were Jordan Henderson, Tyler Overby, Vincent Thrash, Jed Wright, JJ Newman, and alternates Sarah Reed and Tianna Huffman.
