COQUILLE — The Coquille Chess Tournament last week brought several players a guaranteed qualifications to the Oregon Scholastic Federation State Championships in April in Seaside.
Fifth-grader Joshua Grabinsky kept the family tradition, winning the elite section in a three-way tie for first place. Joshua managed to draw with high school senior Henry Lancaster of Cottage Grove, rated 1410, and adult coach Randy Smolensky of Myrtle Creek, rated 1811.
In the high school section, which was merged with the elite, Hailey Riley won first place with three wins, losing only to Joshua and Henry Lancaster. Ian Lawton from Myrtle Creek won second place.
In the adult non-elite section, Arnold Hill won first place and Matthew Botteroff won second.
In the middle school section, both JJ Newman and Vincent Thrash tied for first place. Garrett Baird and Tianna Huffman were only one loss behind them.
Elementary student Bridget Perry won first place in her section. Logan Hill and Johnathan Huffman tied for second.
