As you may already know, the Egyptian Theatre, along with the Coos Bay Downtown Association, sponsors the movie “Elf” right after Thanksgiving. Banner Bank and South Coast Family Dentistry were also sponsors in 2019. That event has grown each year so that now we have two showings with Santa and one without him (because he is busy, you know).
And what fun participants have! Folks come in with bags of socks and many head to the balcony where it is more fun to throw those “snowballs” during the snowball fight scene. If you haven’t been to see “Elf” at the Egyptian, mark your calendars now for next year — the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. The only admission is new, rolled up socks for the snowball fight. While most are white, some are not and we often find them in the theater months after the event so they are saved for the next year.
What you may not know is how many socks are collected and how many agencies are helped by that event. You also may not know that the Soroptomists take delivery of the socks after the shows and wash them all! Even more amazing — they pair them up again and deliver them to some 26 agencies throughout the county including schools, churches, organizations that help the homeless and other worthwhile charities. They just finished making their deliveries this past weekend.
In 2014, the first year we held this event, 925 pairs of socks were collected. In 2015 that figure jumped to 2,024 pairs. It’s grown steadily since then with this year’s collection topping out at 3,554 pairs of socks, a pair of gloves and one hat.
This year, we didn’t receive as many children’s socks as usual so please keep the little ones in mind for next year. Also, the Soroptomist’s have 77 pairs of men’s socks without a home so if you know of an organization that could use the men’s socks, please let Kara at the Egyptian know and she will pass it on.
The ETPA would like to thank the community for supporting this worthwhile event these last years with a special thanks to the members of the Soroptomists for all your work washing and distributing the socks. We look forward to working with you again and making this an even bigger event. Let’s break 4,000 pairs in 2020!
In a recent article in the “Letters to the Editor" column of The World, the writer complained that numbers relating to greenhouse gas emissions from the Jordan Cove Energy Project are untrue. The writer found references in online sources showing that the Jordan Cove energy project will produce 2.2 million metric tons of greenhouse gases per year that will be released into the air. This number is true. It quantifies the amount of greenhouse gasses that will be released in the State of Oregon.
The larger number that he references as being untrue is indeed true also. The 36.8 million metric tons per year is the amount of greenhouse emissions which will be released into the world's atmosphere by the total project from extracting the gas from the ground to final delivery to the user. The greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon are indeed smaller than the total, but how can responsible citizens ignore the overall impact of such a large amount carbon released into our world?
In order to present these numbers in a more understandable way, convert them from metric tons per year to metric tons per hour. An easy way to do this is to first divide the yearly total by the number of days in a year (365), then divide the result of that division by the number of hours in a day (24).
Therefore, 2.2 metric tons per year is equivalent to 251 metric tons per hour. A metric ton is slightly heavier than a standard U.S. ton and folks, 251 of them per hour is a lot of atmospheric contamination, most of which will be concentrated over Coos Bay and North Bend. Who would want to breath that stuff? Many people will have to sell their homes and move a long way from North Bend for health reasons.

It's over. Not just the fake impeachment trial but for the country too. The soft coup has been coming since 2000 when Ralph Nader got only 1% of the vote. So now we have arrived at a deranged, unaccountable, stupendously lying chief executive, a neutered Congress, controlled by Moscow Mitch, and a right wing stuffed judiciary; politically — just like Russia! The main difference in the mirror image is that Trump is owned by Putin. The transfer from rural rube weighted, right-wing semi "democracy" to a kleptocratic, plutocratic, fascistic autocracy has been completed thanks to the Republican senators who will live in infamy.
However, it must be admitted that Pelosi Dems set out to fail in removing Trump from office. First the speaker tried to stall out the impeachment proceedings but was overtaken by Trump's extortion plot exposure. Then it was believed that we were too stupid to handle three articles so the obvious violation of the Constitution's emolument clause was dropped. Then instead of nailing Trump on attempted extortion it was called "abuse of power," allowing the unscrupulous defenders claim that no crime was even charged and to muddy up the abuse definition. But the biggest fault was concentrating on Ukraine instead of Trump's complete stonewalling of the House's investigation — which results in no check on the president's wrongdoing since some unchallenged rule says that he can't be criminally indicted while in office.
Yet this paper's editorial page would have you believe that nothing happened until Senator Wyden belatedly condemned the outcome and an attempted neutralizing Buchanan piece was juxtaposed. The front page headlines featured local pictures and pieces as if a major rip in the country's moral, cohesive fabric was "not much to see here folks."
But what happens in Washington does affect quality of life here? Not only the green new deal supporting restoration of our infrastructure but more insidiously affecting how we think of ourselves. It will be harder to take pride in America, to feel good about ourselves and what we are leaving to future generations. Sliding into depression will be easier, fictionalizing reality will be harder as the consequences of our increasingly callous and greedy behaviors intrude on our self images. Normalizing lying will add to the confusion, polarity and stress. A paper unwilling to tell truth to power and endorse better standards adds to the decline. We have lost more than we know.
At the end of January, Pembina, the parent company of the Jordan Cove Energy Project, withdrew its permit application to the Oregon Department of State Lands. Pembina withdrew its application days after the State of Oregon refused to grant a fourth extension request.
The reason the State did not grant another extension is that, Pembina's application has been incomplete, inadequate and lacking in the information required. With all the money this entity has, they doubtless could provide the information, but they obviously do not want us to see what the real consequences their project would have for our community and environment. Another possibility is Pembina is so inept that they are incapable of correctly filing a permit application. If so, we should also question their ability to complete this complex project. This second possibility would also explain why they are trying to find a buyer for this project.
While their integrity and commitment to our community is of a very low order, there is no telling who they might sell our future to. State of Oregon employees, paid by you and me, have spent years processing Pembina's sub-standard, incomplete applications, and 50,000 people spent time to review the proposal, submit comments, attend meetings and become informed about the consequences of this project.
Then, on the eve of a decision by the Department of State Lands, Pembina callously just said, "Oh forget it." That attitude is a direct manifestation of the disregard this company has for the people of Oregon. As a further demonstration of Pembina’s lack of integrity, Coos County hired five deputies to supply security for their project. Media reports called out the security team for surveillancing people opposed to the project. Then, Pembina stopped funding these deputies leaving their payroll costs to us, the taxpayers of Coos County. These are the same people that don't want to pay taxes to the county but will voluntarily contribute money to various county agencies school districts, so they say.
Will Pembina's "promise" of voluntary payments be sold along with the company? Besides these callous acts, in our lifetimes this project will result in irreparable damage to our environment, economy, communities and health. Are these the kinds of people you want to count on for the well being of this place that is our home?
