OREGON - Portland-based media company MEDIAmerica, publishers of Oregon Business magazine and the well-known 100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon survey, have announced the second annual 100 Best Fan-Favorite Destinations in Oregon for 2018.

Bandon Inn and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort were once again on the list. Bandon Inn was rated 14th (last year 37th), while Bandon Dunes was rated 27th (last year 29th).

This year researchers studied 38,000 reviews, a 72 percent increase over last year’s reviews, on the most widely-used online review sites Google, TripAdvisor and Yelp. Scores were tallied and combined to determine the level of travelers’ overall satisfaction. The scores were then ranked to create the 100 Best Fan-Favorites Destinations list.

The “100 Best” will gain valuable exposure in popular statewide magazines like Oregon Home, Oregon Business, both in print and online. Winners may also promote their achievement with exclusive rights to use the “100 Best” logo on their promotional materials and at point-of-purchase.

The top 100 destinations will once again be charted on a map for visitors and residents to use as a guide for traveling the state. A total of 75,000 statewide maps will be distributed in 2018 at most of the state’s entry points and visitor centers.

"When I was informed that Bandon Inn was one of the Top 100 Best Fan Favorite Destinations in Oregon for 2018 I was amazed," said Bandon Inn owner Peggy Backholm.

Backhom attended the awards luncheon in Portland in December with her manager Molly Smith-Bemetz. They were told that the competition was greater this year.

"So we were thrilled just to be included in the Top 100. When it was announced that Bandon Inn was awarded the 14th Best Fan Favorite Destination in the state of Oregon both Molly and I were really thrilled. When so many people in hospitality gather together, the feeling of community reminds us that we are part of something really special."

"After 23 years in this business I'm still excited about hospitality and making the customer's experience positive," Backholm added.

By the end of February Bandon Inn will also be completing a two-year remodel of all 58 guest rooms including paint, carpet, drapes, new furniture, pillow top beds, new phones, local art and lighting as well as adding many free amenities for our guests. So far, the improvements have been well received, Backholm said.

"It takes a village to accomplish great things; front desk staff, housekeepers, laundry and maintenance staff, baristas and shuttle drivers," she said.

"Several of our employees wear a few different hats which amuses our guests," Backholm explained.

"Upon check in you could be greeted by Frank. If a guest requires help in our gift shop or assistance with our Oregon craft beer and Oregon wines, Frank's your man. When we are shuttling a guest to dinner or the airport don't be surprised if you see Frank at the wheel.

"During the day, Brian is what I call the 'beautification manager.' His painting skills are unbeatable and, in the evening, you can find him driving our shuttle.

"Jenny can be cleaning rooms one day, hanging Christmas lights the next and then move on to hanging new wall art.

"All the employees will pitch in to deliver espresso orders and 'breakfast to go' to our guests."

"This award is possible because we have a truly beautiful town, wonderful restaurants and unparalleled beaches as our support cast that make the guest's experience complete," Backholm said. "I am told every day by our guests that we live in a very special part of the world. I think they are right!"

Backholm has been in the hospitality business for more than 20 years, starting with a small resort in the Olympic Peninsula. The daughter of Bob and Rita Howard, she was born and raised in Bandon.

The 2017 map proved to be very popular according to MEDIAmerica distribution partner Matt Preston of Certified Folder Display Service Inc. who said, “The 100 Best Fan-Favorite Destinations in Oregon brochure is a huge hit in the Travel Oregon Welcome Center program, which includes the PDX International Airport.”

“It is fantastic to see this project grow. Travelers rely more than ever on third party reviews. The participation increase in this important research shows that more destinations are paying attention as well,” said Andrew Insinga, CEO of MEDIAmerica.

Craig Peebles, events manager at MEDIAmerica, added, “To be able to tally and merge data from the big three online review sites was not easy, but the result is worth it. A ranking based purely on customer satisfaction is a true measure of what makes a great destination.”
