Marshfield and North Bend had a combined nine wrestlers still alive after the first day of the state wrestling tournament in Portland.
Marshfield has two wrestlers in this morning's Class 5A quarterfinals.
Cody Shipp pinned both of his foes Thursday at 189 pounds, while Skyler Harvey had a bye and then beat his second-round opponent at 103 pounds.
If Shipp or Harvey win this morning, they will be in the semifinals tonight and guaranteed of placing.
Tyler Nixon won an opening-round match before losing his second bout in overtime at 119 pounds. In the consolation round, Nixon won his first bout by forfeit.
Marshfield's Kody Campbell also won a match before losing a close bout at 171 pounds. He bounced back to win by technical fall in the second round in his consolation bout.
Both Nixon and Campbell would be guaranteed of placing with a win in their first bout today. They will need to beat wrestlers who lose in the quarterfinals this morning.
Marshfield's Jesse Moore, who won a district title 28 years to the day after his dad Scott did the same thing for the Pirates, was knocked out of the tournament when he was injured and couldn't complete his consolation match. He had hopes of placing after joining Campbell and Shipp as district champions.
The Class 5A team leader after the first day was Hermiston, with 55.5 points. Marshfield was 14th with 21.5.
In the Class 4A tournament, North Bend's Nick Cheser had a bye and then a quick pin.
He is the only North Bend wrestler in the quarterfinals, and one of four from the South Coast. Siuslaw has 125-pounder Jacob Graber and 215-pounder Kwartel Hendrickson, while Brookings-Harbor's Pete Peterson (112 pounds) also is in the quarterfinals.
Four North Bend wrestlers won second-round consolation matches to stay alive — Jonathan Fall (112 pounds), Gary Jansma (125), Kyle Deming (130) and Nick Garcia (160).
As with Marshfield's wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets, if any of the four wins his first match today, he will be guaranteed of placing at least eighth.
Scappoose had 59 points Thursday, to take a small lead over Estacada (56), Cascade (54) and Sweet Home (53). Siuslaw was in 18th place with 19 points, one spot and one point ahead of North Bend.
The tournament continues today at the Memorial Coliseum, when the area's Sunset Conference schools join the competition with the rest of Class 3A, as well as the wrestlers from Class 2A-1A.
Reedsport and Myrtle Point have a shot at repeating last year's effort, when both came home with trophies. Gold Beach was fifth last year and looks for another strong showing.
