The Southwestern Oregon Community College softball team swept a pair of games from host Mount Hood on Saturday, winning 5-2 and 11-1 to knock the Saints out of first place in the NWAC South Region.
The Lakers jumped out front 4-0 in the first inning of the opener.
Alyssa Martinez hit a solo home run to lead off the game. Shelby Harris had a two-run double and Arissa Vega had a single to score Harris. The Lakers got their other run in the seventh, when Mercedes Russell had a single to score Jocelyn Simon, who had two hits in the game.
Marisa Peters pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts for the Lakers.
In the other game, the Lakers fell behind 1-0 early, went in front in the second inning with two runs and put the game away with an eight-run fifth inning.
Martinez had another homer, this one a grand slam in the fifth inning. Harris had two hits, a run and an RBI. Vega and Jasmine Ries each scored two runs.
Jessica Hernandez allowed two hits and struck out five while picking up the win for the Lakers.
With the sweep, SWOCC bounced back from a doubleheader sweep by Clackamas early last week.
The Lakers (10-5) are third in the NWAC South Region behind Lower Columbia (11-3) and Mount Hood (10-4).
The SWOCC baseball team got a pitching gem by Dustin Chartrand to beat Chemeketa 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday and avoid a four-game weekend sweep at home against the Storm.
Chemeketa had won Saturday’s opener 12-4 after taking both games Friday,
Chartrand gave up four hits and struck out two while picking up the complete-game win in Saturday’s second game. The Lakers got the only run in the second inning, when Clayton Lewis singled home TarQuin Daley, who had singled earlier in the inning and moved up on a sacrifice by Chandler Kochan.
Chemeketa won Sunday’s first game by scoring three runs in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and adding six more in the eighth.
Daley had a home run for the Lakers in the loss and Conner Larson had two hits, a run and an RBI.
Chemeketa swept Friday’s games 8-2 and 4-2. In the second of those games, the Storm scored twice in the ninth to break a 2-all tie. Larson had a home run in the loss and Riley Quinton and Ryan Merino each had two hits.
The Lakers won the first game of the series early in the week, making it two straight weeks the Lakers went 2-3 against a South Region foe.
This week, SWOCC faces Lane, with a single game in Eugene on Tuesday, two in Coos Bay on Friday and two more in Eugene on Saturday.
Lane is second in the South Region at 5-3 while the Lakers are fifth at 4-6. Linn-Benton leads the region with a 9-1 record.
