The Southwestern Oregon Community College men’s soccer team opened NWAC South Region play with a 2-2 draw with host Chemeketa on Saturday in Salem.
Kuda Murasiranwa gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead just before halftime with a breakaway goal assisted by Alex Moskowitz.
Chemeketa scored twice in a three-minute span starting in the 77th minute to take a 2-1 lead, but SWOCC responded with a goal by Colin Miller off a corner kick by Moskowitz.
Liam Bates made nine saves for the Lakers.
“Overall, we were very pleased with the team effort and attitude,” SWOCC coach Brad Williams said.
SWOCC’s women fell to the Storm 2-0. Elena Garcia scored both goals, in the 47th and 48th minutes.
The Laker women host Clackamas at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Then SWOCC’s men and women host Rogue on Saturday, with the women starting at 1 p.m., followed by the men.
SWOCC’s volleyball team had the weekend off as the Lakers prepare for the start to the South Region season next weekend.
The Lakers won two of their four matches on their annual California trip last weekend.
On the opening day of the trip, Feather River beat SWOCC 25-10, 24-26, 26-21, 25-19.
Brooke Fisher had 13 kills for the Lakers and Laura Gross added seven, Blythe Ballesteros had 26 assists.
The following day, the Lakers won two matches.
SWOCC beat Lassen 25-17, 25-16, 25-16. Fisher had 13 kills and Gross seven. Shaylynn Jensen had 22 assists. Chauna Gandauli had three aces. SWOCC also beat Mendocino 25-15, 25-10, 25-13. Fisher had 14 kills, Gross eight and Baley VanWormer five. Jensen had 19 assists and Ballesteros 13.
The Lakers finished the trip with a loss to Butte College, 25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 25-16. Fisher had 19 kills and Brittany Long seven. Jensen had 22 assists.
