Marshfield will celebrate its state champion girls basketball team in a banquet on Friday, April 20 that will feature University of Oregon standout Lexi Bando as guest speaker.

The banquet is open to the public and part of the $40 admission fee will go to help the basketball team pay for a trip next season to Arizona.

The event will be held at The Mill Casino-Hotel and will feature a silent auction and social time from 5 to 6:30 p.m., when dinner will be served. The program, including team awards and recognition and remarks from Bando, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The basketball team was ranked No. 1 most of the season and made that ranking stand up in the state tournament, beating Cascade for the title to win the first girls team title in a team sport that involves a ball (Marshfield has won titles in track and field, dance and cheerleading, as well as sharing the title in tennis back in 1967, the Pirates' first girls championship).

Bando played against the Pirates in Pirate Palace during her days at Willamette High School before moving on to a stellar career at the University of Oregon, where she was the top 3-point shooter in the country in terms of accuracy and helped the Ducks come within a game of the Final Four her junior and senior seasons.

For more information, contact the Marshfield athletic department by phone at 541-267-1440 or by email at sandyr@coos-bay.k12.or.us. Organizers would like to know how many people are planning to attend by Friday.
