Marshfield’s girls cruised into the championship match in the Evergreen Federal Bank Tournament in the Grants Pass area with a 54-29 win over South Umpqua.
The Pirates led by 10 at halftime before breaking the game open by outscoring the Lancers 22-4 in the third quarter.
“We came out in the first half a bit sluggish offensively,” Marshfield coach Bruce Bryant said. “We played a much more solid second half on both sides of the ball.”
Tess Garrett scored 22 points for the Pirates and Hailey Browning added eight.
Marshfield meets Hidden Valley in the championship game Saturday after the Mustangs topped Class 5A Crater 58-30 in the other semifinal. Marshfield is ranked No. 1 and Hidden Valley No. 2 in the Class 4A power rankings.
Salem Academy 65, Coquille 26: The Crusaders topped the Red Devils in the Salem Academy tournament, holding Coquille to 17 points in the final three quarters.
The Crusaders advanced to the championship game of their bracket in the tournament. Coquille faces Nyssa in the third-place game while Salem Academy battles Dayton.
Coquille and Salem Academy met for third place in the past two state tournaments, with the Crusaders winning both games.
In other games at the tournament Friday, Gold Beach beat Gervais 42-40 to reach the championship game in its bracket and Brookings-Harbor bounced back from a loss to Valley Catholic on Thursday with a win over De La Salle North Catholic.
Bandon 41, Umpqua Valley Christian 18: The Tigers got their first win of the season as Ashley Strain scored 15 points and sisters Kylie and Nikki Lakey added eight each.
“I was proud of them,” Bandon coach Jordan Sammons said. “I’m glad they were able to see a little success for all their hard work. As hard as they have been working, they deserved to get a win.
“We’ve just got to keep building on that and working hard every day.”
Liz Jarvis had 12 points for the Monarchs.
Phoenix 36, Myrtle Point 28: The Bobcats fell at home in a nonleague game against the Class 4A Pirates.
Isabella Lopez had 12 points and Taylor DeVry 10 for the Pirates in the win. Madison Brown led the Bobcats with six points.
North Valley 35, Marshfield 30: The host Knights rallied in the fourth quarter to deny the Pirates a spot in the championship game of the Evergreen Federal Bank Tournament.
Colton Lauby had 13 points and Aaron McLittle added 12 for the Knights, who trailed 22-19 heading to the fourth quarter.
Grant Woolsey had four 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead Marshfield, which had just seven points in the first half. Grant Webster added nine points and Jordy Miles eight.
Marshfield faces Scappoose in the third-place game.
Coquille 57, Brookings-Harbor 37: The Red Devils bounced back from their first loss of the season a day earlier to beat the Bruins in the Crusader New Year’s Invitational.
Seth Waddington scored 19 points, Hayden Davis had 14 and Henry Scolari scored 11 in the win.
Austin Fronckowiak had 14 for the Bruins, who lost to Coquille for the second time this season.
Coquille faces East Linn Christian in the fourth-place game after the Eagles edged Lakeview 59-57. The Bruins face the Honkers.
In another game, Gold Beach fell to Sheridan 56-48 in its bracket.
Bandon 43, Umpqua Valley Christian 20: The Tigers outscored the Monarchs 27-5 in the second half to pull away for an easy win in the consolation game at the Oakland tournament.
Coby Smith had 23 points and Braydon Freitag 18 in the win for Bandon. Jacob Mesa scored 10 for the Monarchs.
“We finally got a few shots to drop,” Bandon coach Matt Angove said.
