Rex Young pulled the lucky marble from a bag at the Marshfield Booster Club meeting Thursday, winning a record 50-50 jackpot, and then gave some of his winnings back to the club to help purchase a new barbecue.
The pot had built up over the fall to $1,174 because none of the weekly winners pulled the lucky white marble from a bag filled with that marble and a handful of black ones. Young donated $250 of his winnings back to the club.
Marshfield Booster Club President Steve Schneiderman said the donation was timely because the club needs a new barbecue. Club members cook hamburgers at a number of events, mostly during football games and Meet the Pirates nights, when the club provides food for the athletes and coaches.
In other business Thursday, the Booster Club presented athlete of the week awards to wrestler Jesse Moore and swimmer Jana Sadler.
The club presents awards each week to a boy and girl, nominated by the coaches of the various teams throughout the seasons.
Moore won all four of his matches at the Oregon Classic in Redmond and has had a strong season. Sadler won two events at recent duals against both Thurston and Churchill and has been one of the swim team's captains.
The Booster Club also recently decided to sponsor a South Coast All-Star basketball series for boys and girls from the 11 area high schools.
A committee will select 20 boys and 20 girls for the games, which will be held on Saturday, March 20, at Marshfield High School. Coaches and media will nominate players for the games and former area coaches will serve as the All-Star coaches for the games.
The girls will play at 5 p.m., with the boys at 7. The teams will practice on March 14 and prior to the games on March 20.
The Booster Club will serve as the chief organizer for the event, with Les Schwab Tires helping with the sponsorship of the players jerseys.
A 3-point shootout and possibly a dunk contest will be held during halftime of the games.
