Coquille Martial Arts hosted a summer invitational tournament last weekend.

The event included nearly 30 competitors, ages 5 to 51, from Coquille Martial Arts, Henderson’s Shorin Ryu and Empire Tang Soo Do of Empire, and Reiss’s East West Karate from Coos Bay.

Following the event, the school hosted a four-hour systema workshop taught by a visiting instructor from Eugene. Systema is a Russian martial art that focuses on breathing, posture, movement and relaxation. Drills included learning to relax the body to release it from being pinned, and learning to relax while moving through obstacles while blindfolded. Another workshop will be held later this fall.

Four Coquille Martial Arts students competed in the 5-year-old beginner age group.

In sparring, Tiana Howley of Bandon was first, followed by Milana Fortune and Johnathon Huffman of Coquille and Abby Perdue of Bandon. Huffman placed first in both flag sparring and forms, followed in each category by Fortune, Howley and Perdue.

Ivana Ferrer finished first in beginner forms in the 7-9 age group, while Tianna Huffman was first in both intermediate forms and intermediate weapons in the same age group.

Shanley Geddry of Coquille was first in the 10-12 beginner division in forms and second in sparring, while Jason Brant was second in forms and first in weapon forms and sparring.

In the 10-12 intermediate/advanced division, Johnathon England of Bandon was first and Kayla Houston of Myrtle Point second in both forms and weapons forms.

Max Underdown of Bandon was first in weapons forms and sparring in the 10-12 junior black belt division.

Joselyn Smith of Coquille was first in weapons and third in sparring and forms in the 14-17 advanced division.
