The Basket Junkies, an eighth-grade team from North Bend, won the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon’s first 3-on-3 basketball tournament last weekend.
A total of five teams participated, all in the boys sixth- to eighth-grade division. They played in a round-robin format before competing in a bracket.
The Basket Junkies, who went unbeaten for the day, included Craig Edera, Maddux Mateski, Grady Diefenbaugh and Reef Berry and was coached by Tracy Diefenbaugh.
The group beat Attack Dawgs, a seventh-grade team from North Bend in the championship game. Attack Dawgs included Jake Newsum, Brock Jensen, Kolby VanElsberg and Ethan Ward and was coached by John Newsum.
The seventh-grade team Panthers from Bandon, including Hayden White, Dylan Kamph, William Panagakis and Daniel Cabrera and coached by Alex White, was third. The Bulldogs, another seventh-grade team from North Bend, was fourth, and included players Bryatn Wicks, Kienyn Wicks, Porter Foltz, David Roberts and Jacob Randle, with coach Kirk Wicks. Avortex, a sixth-grade team from North Bend, took fifth, and featured Cole Hansen, Jalen Riddle, Aidan Nelson and Joshio Stevens, with coach Chris Hansen.
Some players also participated in a 3-point contest, with Grady Diefenbaugh of North Bend winning by making 11 of 25 shots. Cabrera of Bandon was second, making 10 shots.
Boys & Girls Club officials extended thanks to volunteers John Riddle, Jordan Ward, Kendra Foltz, Sara Wicks, Jordyn Wicks, Cheyanne Datan, Tom Brainard, Nick Thompson, Jordan Houck, Riley Houck and Kendall White.
Parents can sign up their kids now for fall soccer at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon.
The program is for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade. The first games are on Saturday, Sept. 23. Practices will begin soon.
The fee is $75 with a current Boys & Girls Club membership and fee reductions are available for those who qualify.

Pre Run for Kids
Students can sign up now for the Pre Run for Kids, a 3-mile race that will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17.
The race is for boys and girls in grades 1-8 and is free thanks to the Prefontaine Foundation, Tower Ford and TeeShirt Express. Shirts will be available while supplies last.
The race will start at 1:30 p.m. in downtown Coos Bay. Medals will be awarded to the top three boys and girls in each age group.

The final week of tennis camp at the Boys & Girls Club starts on Monday, Aug. 21.
The camp runs through Thursday, Aug. 24 and the fee is $50 for students 5 to 7 years old and $75 for students 8-18. All participants also must have a current club membership.
The camp goes from 9-10 a.m. for students ages 5-7, from 10 a.m.-noon for students 8-12 and from 1-3 p.m. for students ages 13-18.
