The first Charleston Salmon Run included well over 200 participants and was a big success in the eyes of organizers.

The event last weekend included the first sanctioned marathon on the South Coast as well as a half marathon and a 10-kilometer road race.

While the challenging marathon had 28 finishers, the other races were popular.

The half marathon had 127 finishers and the 10K had 115.

Jessica Engelke, one of the organizers, was excited about the reaction of the visitors.

“I have been following social media posts and everybody loved it,” she said, adding that she enjoyed looking at the photos taken by people from outside the area. “It is fun looking at things through the eyes of a tourist.”

Another person told Engelke that he bumped into a bunch of runners from the Vancouver and Portland area in a shop after the race who were raving about it.

“I know this will have an impact on our economy and it will only build from here,” Engelke said.
