Defending champion Brian Gibson earned the top seed for the annual Crossings Cup Playoffs at Bandon Crossings, finishing with the most points during the Casual Fridays season.

Gibson opened the match play tournament Friday, beating No. 8 seed Tom Gant 4 and 3.

Brian Boyle was the No. 2 seed, and topped No. 7 John Johnston 4 and 2.

Bobby Cox was the No. 3 seed, and lost to No. 6 Val Nemcek 3 and 1. Mark Nortness was No. 4 and beat No. 5 John Ohanesian 4 and 3.

The semifinals are scheduled for Sept. 15, with the championship and third-place matches on Sept. 22.

Gibson won the Crossings Cup last year, beating Dane Ross in the championship match and is trying to become both the first two-time champion and the first player to defend the title. Ohanesian beat Boyle in the third-place match.

Nortness also advanced to the final eight last year.
