Finley Cheal of the South Coast Aquatic Team won the state title in the 200-yard individual medley at the recent Oregon 11-14 state championships.
Cheal was one of eight SCAT swimmers — four girls and four boys — who qualified for and competed in the state meet.
The 11-year-old placed in the top four in all six of his races, including taking second in both the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
Natalie Cheal, Finley’s older sister, was second in the 100 butterfly, a fraction of a second ahead of teammate Bella Jones. Natalie Cheal had three additional top-10 finishes and Jones had four.
Marvrick Macalino was sixth in the 100 freestyle and had one other top-10 effort. Gavyn Tatge was sixth and David Roberts seventh in the longest event, the 1650 freestyle. Tatge also had one other top-10 effort.
Rio Trichler and Apryl Paquette also competed in the meet for SCAT.
