Former Marshfield standout Jared Bassett won the annual Run of Two Cities last weekend in Coos Bay.
Bassett, who now lives in the Bend area following his All-America career at the University of Portland, covered the hilly 10-kilometer course in 33 minutes and 36 seconds. That was well over 2 minutes faster than runner-up Hunter Hutton, a current Bandon standout, who finished in 35:59. Jeremy West of Coos Bay was third in 38:55.
Basseett’s wife, Elizabeth, was the top female finisher in 49:23. She was followed by Danielle Jensen (51:22) and Carol Aron (51:32).
The 10-kilometer course took runners form Mingus Park through downtown North Bend and included several challenging hills on 10th Street, Koosbay Boulevard and Sherman Avenue.
Ian Nolan edged Gavyn Tatge, in a battle of two middle school runners, to win the also-challenging 5-kilometer race. Nolan finished in 23:26 and Tatge in 23:27. Antonio Hernandez was third in 24:32.
Sara Elgin was the top female finisher in the 5K (25:58), followed by Angie Black (27:46) and Megan Tatge (28:41).
