Four students from Coquille Martial Arts competed in Oregon City at a tournament on Feb. 7 hosted by Brent Mullins and Northwest Martial Arts, winning 15 trophies in a variety of divisions and events ranging from flag sparring, padded stick sparring and point sparring to forms and weapons.

John Huffman, age 4, placed second in both flag sparring and padded stick sparring.

His sister, Tianna Huffman, age 8, placed third in point sparring and second in forms, weapons, stick sparring and flag sparring.

Their mom, Misty Huffman, placed third in forms, fourth in flag sparring and first in both stick and point sparring.

Geoffery Perry placed second in point sparring and first in weapons, stick sparring and forms, and qualified to compete in grand champion forms.

Head instructors Jim and Karen Saxton, as well as black belts Patrick and Taryn Perry, took turns judging and coaching.

Baseball clinic

The North Bend Independent Baseball Program will hold its 2009 baseball clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. on March 8 at the North Bend High School gymnasium.

The clinic, designed for children ages 7 to 13, includes hitting, pitching and fielding drills. The instruction will be provided by North Bend High School baseball coach Brad Horning and his players.

The participation fee is $15 for those who sign up early and $18 at the door.

The clinic is sponsored by the North Bend Independent Baseball Program, Bay Area Sunrise Rotary Club, Faith Lutheran Church, Lakeshore Lodge and Safeway.

Spring sports sign-ups

All boys and girls in grades 1 through 6 interested in participating in spring soccer and in grades 4 through 6 who want to take part in track and field are encouraged to sign up Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. The fee is $50 with a current club membership and fee reductions are available for those who qualify.

Spring soccer games start on March 28. The first track and field meet will be the same day, with meets held every Saturday through April 25.

Kindergarten soccer

Registration forms now are being accepted for kindergarten soccer.

Coach Ray Fabien and the men’s soccer team at Southwestern Oregon Community College will assist in the program, which teaches boys and girls the fundamentals of soccer using fun drills and competitions.

The group will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in April at the soccer field on the campus at Southwestern.

The fee is $35 with a current club membership, and registration forms are available at local schools, the club, or on-line at www.bgc-sworegon.org.
