COOS BAY — Coquille’s girls capped their season with the fourth-place trophy at Marshfield High School on Saturday, beating Nyssa at the Class 3A state tournament.
The Red Devils finished their season with a win over the team that handed them their last regular-season loss in December at the Salem Academy Tournament, a game that turned Coquille’s season around.
On Saturday morning, both teams struggled with their shooting. Nyssa led 16-13 at halftime, but didn’t score in the third quarter. Coquille took a 22-16 lead to the fourth when Savannah Salazar banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Nyssa never got closer than four down in the fourth.
The Red Devils earned a trophy for the third straight year, having placed fifth each of the past two seasons, losing to Dayton in the semifinals and Salem Academy in the third-place game. Dayton also beat Coquille in the quarterfinals this week and meets Salem Academy for the title Saturday night.
Abbey Dieu had a big day for Coquille with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Halle Layton added eight points and 10 boards and Morgan Baird had nine rebounds.
All three of those players will be back next year, when the Red Devils drop down to Class 2A.
Kierra Hernandez led Nyssa with eight points and Sailor Hartley added seven points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot just 10-for-49 (20.4 percent) from the floor and 2-for-21 (9.5 percent) on 3-pointers.
