The Reedsport football team took a big step toward the Class 2A playoffs Friday, but had to come from behind against visiting Toledo to do it.
Though the Boomers entered the week with just one loss, they gave Reedsport all it could handle early, building a 16-0 lead before Reedsport came back.
Gage Billings, who had a big night in the win, got Reedsport on the board with a 43-yard run in the second quarter and The Brave pulled even by halftime on a touchdown pass from Marc Chaney to Javier Analco. Chaney also connected on both two-point conversions — first with Dallas McGill, then with Analco.
But Toledo went in front again in the third quarter before Reedsport scored the final 21 points of the game.
Chaney had a pair of touchdown runs and then Billings scored his second touchdown to cap a night when he also ran for 111 yards.
Reedsport forced two big fourth-quarter turnovers to hold off the boomers — an interception by Nick Glover and a fumble recovery by Dallas McGill. Glover also had an interception in the second quarter and Tanner Eckley recovered a fumble in the third.
Reedsport finishes the season Friday at Myrtle Point in great shape to advance to the playoffs.
If league-leading Gold Beach beats Bandon in their finale, the Brave will finish second. If Bandon wins, there will be a three-way title for the title, provided Reedsport beats the winless Bobcats.
At No. 9 in the Oregon School Activities Association power rankings, Reedsport is virtually guaranteed a postseason spot, though most likely not a home game.
Friday’s game at Myrtle Point starts at 7 p.m.
