With respect to John Burn's op-ed piece expressing his "disillusion" with Senator Merkley's position regarding the Jordan Cove Project, I would take exception to his use of the word "disillusioned." Frankly, much stronger words come to my mind; more like disappointed and disgusted.
Senator Merkley seems to show a shocking lack of understanding of the issue and its impact not only on southern Oregon but on the national level, as well. In my previous encounters with Jeff Merkley I have been impressed with his seeming compassion and understanding of the issues rural Oregon faces. It appears, in the end, has capitulated and decided to side with the ideologically pure environmentalist community. They do, after all, have the money and the metro voter base whereas we are mere beggars at the trough. Frankly, I thought Jeff had more character than this latest action suggests.
LNG as an export commodity is good for our balance of payments deficit. It helps rid the globe of CO2 and other harmful gases, as Burns mentions, and it puts people to work in Coos County and beyond throughout southern Oregon and all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Until we get the money out of politics, I fear this sort of thing will continue to get worse before it gets better.
