Reverse ORCCA's secrecy policy

Oregon Coast Community Action's new media policy is a giant step backward that will further erode the nonprofit's shaky credibility. Last week's announcement that it would be less forthcoming than in the past is stunning given the organization's communication issues. For an organization that has only recently taken babysteps toward being more open, this bunker mentality creates an unfortunate impression of arrogance.

For the past few months, The World has shone a light on charges of cronyism and mismanagement within the South Coast's largest nonprofit agency. Initially, ORCCA management ignored calls for transparency. Under intense scrutiny, the board relented, vowing a more open media policy. But last week, citing alleged breaches in employee confidentiality and mean-spirited 'bloggers," the board said it no longer would indulge reporters' requests.

That's a problem for an organization whose actions have at times cut off crucial food supplies to some of the region's most hungry. That's a problem for an organization that has gotten itself in trouble by keeping its mouth shut. That's a problem for an organization that has lost the trust of many in our community.

One of the steps ORCCA said it would take to address that breach of trust is to hire a pantry coordinator. What will that person do? What criteria will be used in that hiring? Has anyone already been hired? Those are questions ORCCA won't answer as it hides behind its new policy.

ORCCA's a big organization with many components. It's largely made up of good people who work hard to make our community better. Yet its leadership seems utterly tonedeaf to the situation it faces. One need only do a Google search of 'ORCCA" to see that the organization's reputation has been badly damaged by its silence. A policy that embraces even more silence will make things worse.

ORCCA can't hide an audit, they need it for grants etc... no yearly audit, no grants. I went to the orcca site and searched for 2010 audit and went to the document page and there it was along with audits dating back to 2006. The 2011 audit is also listed if you do a search for that. If that's hidden, I don't think you looked very hard.

I'm sorry Danny, but name calling among adults seems so juvenile.

Hey me2! Re-read Greenman's comment "Never in the previous 40+ years of ORCCA's operation did they deliberately hide part of their audit from the public until last year." OK, so they got a clean audit this year. How convenient to explain away and justify everything - Queen Mary's classic strategy every time someone questions her. She's obviously succeeded in blowing smoke in your face. Around the State ORCCA has become the poster-child for bad management. Sarg Shriver is spinning in his grave!

Danny, do you not get that the money spent on meals during the year 09-10 was covered in the "clean" audit. The audit was done by an independent auditor a person who is unbiased, unlike the writers at The World Newspaper, who clearly have an agenda. If you have an issue with the veracity of the audit talk with the auditor not those who hired them.

Kay, is this okay with you? It's important to buy local, but this much at Ciccarelli's? with stimulus money? huh? How are you justifying this is acceptable. and OPEN your eyes, there are people starving all around us. Must be nice to be well fed.

    • Spending $2,392 on meals in financial year 09-10 using federal stimulus money.

I believe this whole hullabaloo is about selling papers, surprise surprise vilification of my neighbors in the name of the all mighty dollar. Who would have thought that our "hometown paper" would stoop so low!
Look up the word RAG in the dictionary: you see a picture of The World, or should I say the "City Limits"

The problem, Moonpenny, is that ORCCA's business IS the public's right to know. Virtually all of ORCCA's funds come from the public, and the public has the right to hold ORCCA accountable. Never in the previous 40+ years of ORCCA's operation did they deliberately hide part of their audit from the public until last year. Now they have a new audit that they can crow about as "clean;" and all the while keep the "dirty" previous audit hidden from view. Not secret? LOL! Stinks too!

mOOnpenny: I have no conspiracy theories. There are copies of tort claims, employee complaints, customer complaints, partner complaints, subsidiary complaints.... do I go on? No theories involved, all facts.

They operate with OUR tax dollars. They are a private non-profit corporation but operate on the public's behalf with OUR money. Therefore they must answer and be responsible for their horrible mismanagement.

So who's door do we need to knock on to unseat these individuals? This has been dragging on for months now and it's time for the axe to fall. And for the guilty in ORCCA who are reading this... no, we're not going away. We will not cease until you either resign or are removed by legal process. x

I find it interesting that the most "Mean-spirited blogger" in the Forum and Opinion page is in support of ORCCA's incompetent management. That would be you Kay. And the only reason is because they said they would buy your friend Mary at MGx's defunct wind machine for the kiddies at head-start. Normally you would be the first to roast them on the spit.
