Coos County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 10.4 percent in October, down from 10.6 percent the previous month and 11.1 percent a year ago.
Total payroll employment increased by 180 jobs in October. Retail trade added 30 jobs, professional and business services added 50 and educational and health services added 20. Mining and logging lost 20 jobs, and leisure and hospitality lost 30.
The state employment department estimated the county's labor force at 28,383, up 110 from September but down 490 from a year ago.
Compared with September, 160 more county residents were unemployed -- totaling 2,828 -- but that number also was down 273 from a year ago.
Curry County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 11.5 percent, down from 11.6 percent in September and 11.9 a year ago.
In Curry County, total payroll employment fell by 130 jobs in October. From the previous month, the labor force shrank by 231 to 9,208 -- 221 fewer workers than the county had in Oct. 2011.
In Curry County, the employment department identified 964 people as unemployed, 62 more than in September and 74 fewer than a year ago.
