BROOKINGS (AP) — The decomposing carcass of a 40-foot sperm whale has washed up on a beach in Southern Oregon.

Oregon Parks and Recreation spokesman Chris Havel says it came in on the tide early Thursday near Chetco Point in Brookings.

He says the carcass is too far gone to try to haul it off, and the beach sand is too shallow to try to bury it, so it will just be left to rot.

People who go to look at the whale are advised to approach from upwind.
