Richard lived most all of his life on the family dairy at Norway known as Linden Dairy. Where Linden Equipment was founded by Richard's father Donald R. Schmidt. Richard and his father worked together for many years. He was at the beck and call of many in need of their farm equipment to be fixed. After the death of his father, Richard went into business with his son, David, then it became Schmidt Equipment Co.
Richard graduated from Myrtle Point High School in 1958, where he had a love for basketball. After retirement, Richard enjoyed having breakfast with his friends at Railroad Avenue Restaurant in Myrtle Point where they shared stories.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Misty Dawn of Calif.; sons, David of Norway, Kurtis of Newburg and step-son Darren E. Layman of Coos Bay; mother, Florence Schmidt of Myrtle Point; Sisters, Diana Hurd, Doree Dayton and husband, Dennis, Sara Varney and husband, Jim all of Springfield; brother, Ernest Allen and wife, Lynne of Norway and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Graveside services for Richard will be 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 10 at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens in Coquille with High Priest Jim Lloyd and Priest Ranelle Allen Morris of the Community of Christ Church in Myrtle Point officiating.
