At his request, no services will be held for Joseph Oliver Floyd, 84, of Coos Bay. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.
Joseph was born in Fullerton, Calif., April 7, 1933, to parents Grover and Mary (Frogley) Floyd. He passed away Jan. 30, 2018 in Coos Bay.
Joe graduated high school in Santa Ana, Calif., and enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve at the age of 17. After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve for several years, he decided to enlist in the United States Army, where he served as a lineman in Korea from 1952–1954. When he returned, he went to work for Pacific Bell Telephone in southern California.
Joe met and married Esther Summerfield Jan. 20, 1956 in Yuma, Ariz. They moved in 1961, to Oregon where he went to work for West Coast Telephone Company. He worked there until the company was sold to GTE. He continued his career in communications for more than 30 years until his retirement.
Joe encouraged his wife to follow her passion and they opened Elf Nursery and Floral in 1968, which remained in business for 43 years. He also worked part time for KBBR broadcasting and was a reserve officer for the North Bend Police Department. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the Coos Bay Train Museum. Joe had a passion for structural building and was meticulous with all of his work and hobbies.
Together, Joe and Esther raised three children.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; daughters, Joy and her husband, Leonard, and Donna and her husband, Lewis; son, Michael and his wife, Joyce; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
