John Joelson

Sept. 27, 1938 - Aug. 26, 2017

A service will be conducted by the Rev. Dan Pitney for John Robert Joelson at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at Salem First Methodist Church, 600 State St., in Salem

John was born in Eugene, to Albert and Mildred Joelson. John grew up in Roseburg and graduated from Roseburg High School in 1956. John attended Oregon State University and was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. John graduated in 1961 with the honor of distinguished military graduate. While attending OSU John married Sandra Howlett in 1958 and in 1961, they welcomed their son, Brian Joelson, followed by Bradley Joelson in 1962.

In 1961 John joined the United States Army where he was an Airborne Ranger and was later honorably discharged in May 1965 with the rank of captain. After leaving the Army John attended the University of Oregon where he received a Masters of Business Administration. He then went on to work for Pacific Northwest Bell as a regional manager. In 1971 John married Sylvia Powers and moved to Coos Bay. They together purchased Purkeys Furniture stores in Coos Bay, Coquille and North Bend. While living in Coos Bay John participated in various activities including; Coos Bay Council Member 1982-1986, president of Coos Bay/North Bend Rotary member of Coos Bay Pirates, and member of the Coos Bay Elks. He and his wife Sylvia moved to Keizer in 1998 upon retirement.

John was a loving and generous person. He enjoyed spending time with his family and cherished his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although he attended both OSU and U of O, he was an avid Beavers football fan and a season ticket holder for more than 20 years. John enjoyed reading books, discussing politics and talking about the stock market (the stock he should have sold and the one he should have bought). He also cherished his pride and joy, a 1955 fire engine red Ford Thunderbird.

With all of John’s activities and joys in life he never forgot where these blessings came from. He followed his Lord Jesus Christ and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salem. He cherished his fellowship with the church and served in many capacities as a greeter, member of the finance committee and driving other members that were unable to get to church. During John’s physical decline, the church provided him with spiritual support and visitations to the hospital.

Dad, Grandpa…your laugh, your joy and your love will be missed. You’ve created lasting memories that will remain in our hearts and we thank you for your legacy and that you’ve created for us. We love you and miss you…until we meet again…”

John was preceded in death by his father, Albert (1973); mother, Mildred (1990); brother, Albert (1988); his wife, Sylvia (2003); and his stepson, Randy Powers.
