A memorial service will be held for Jerry Luoto, 77, of Coquille at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Coquille Christian Community Church, 625 E. 10th St., with Dr. Kevin Boll officiating.
Jerry was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Westport, Ore., to Einor and Susanna Luoto. He went to heaven Jan. 18, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Jerry moved with his family to McMinnville during his junior year of high school and met Salli King. Jerry and Salli started dating in 1951. Jerry graduated from McMinnville High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1955. He and Salli were married Dec. 30, 1955.
After completion of his service in the Air Force, Jerry went to Linfield College where he earned a degree in education and art. Upon graduation, Jerry and Salli moved to Coquille, where he taught art and P.E. and coached for 28 years retiring in 1993. He continued to coach football for two years after retirement.
Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid sports fan and continued his love of art by making furniture, wood carvings and growing beautiful flowers.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Salli; two sons, J.C. and Irene of Coquille and Deric and Molly of Wilsonville; grandson, Chris of Aspen, Colo.; granddaughter, Rachel who is attending college in Seattle, Wash.; stepgrandchildren, Ryan Wechter and family, Logan Wechter and William Trendell; great-grandson, Aiden Trendell; brother-in-law, Jim King and Pat of Georgia; nephew, David King and family of Georgia; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Luoto of Portland; and niece, Kristi Starr and family of Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim; and nephew, Jim.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Coquille Christian Community Church Memorial Fund or Coquille High School Booster Club.
