A chapel memorial service for George Lewis McLean, 91, of Charleston, formerly of Gold Beach, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave. with Father Karl Shcray, of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, officiating. Cremation rites have been held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory in Coos Bay.

George was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of George Dewey and Irene Rebecca (Mitchell) McLean. He passed away peacefully Feb. 25, 2012, at home with family and his loving wife, Mary, by his side.

After high school, George joined the U.S. Air Force in Denver, Colo., at Fort Logan. He worked his way up to staff sergeant as an air inspector. George earned a presidential citation for a project to expedite troops overseas. He was honorably discharged in 1945. George worked as a bartender in several places. He married Mary Jaquess in 1942. They had three children and were together 14 years. George later found his way to Gold Beach and married Mary Shannon in 1978. Together, they owned and operated the City Center Motel until 1989. They enjoyed traveling and entertaining at their home with family and friends. George was a member of the BPOE Elks Club for 52 years and started up the Christmas basket program in Gold Beach.

George is survived by his wife, Mary McLean of Charleston; daughters, Carla Smith of Byron Ga., and Jessica Kinney of Kathleen, Ga.; stepdaughters, Jacque Shields of Charleston, Debbie Turner of Philomath and Kay Billo of California; brothers, Richard McLean of San Antonio, Texas and Robert McLean of Bakersfield, Calif.; sister, Kathryn Bennett of Choteau, Mont.; stepsister, Mina DeGarmo of North Hills, Calif.; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Maslow Project and Teen Homeless Center, 760 S. Second St. Coos Bay, OR 97420.
