A celebration of life will be held for Earline Rose, 92, at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 Shoreline Community Church, North Bend. A private graveside service will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens, Coos Bay. She passed away in Monmouth, Feb. 1, 2018.
She was born Feb. 4, 1925, near Kell, Ill., to Claude Earl Hawkins and Neta Beatrice Tucker. She moved to California in 1943, and married Morris Wayne Sumner Dec. 25, 1943. They lived in Long Beach and then Lakewood, and had two children, Jill and Mark. In 1954 they moved to Barstow, Calif. where Wayne managed a hardware store. Earline worked as a church secretary and a radio station office manager. Wayne passed away in 1962. Earline married Donald Arley Rose, Aug. 23, 1963, and the family moved to Alta Loma, Calif. Don began a career in education, and Earline worked as a secretary at a local high school. In 1971 they moved to Blue Jay, where Earline worked clerical positions at the high school and retired in 1985. They spent the summer of 1989 in Winchester Bay, where Don did commercial fishing. When Don suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed on one side, they lived with Jill in Monmouth, while he was in rehab. They made their new home in Coos Bay, in 1991. Don passed away in 1994, and Earline remained in Coos Bay until moving to Brookdale Senior Living in Monmouth, in 2014.
Earline was always an active member of a local Christian congregation. In Coos Bay she attended Hauser Community Church and later Shoreline Community Church. She was a member of Friends of the Coos Bay Library, the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at Red Cross blood drives and the SMART Reading program.
Earline was an avid reader, enjoyed dining out with friends, traveling, and attending local concerts. Most important to her were her faith, family, and friends. She was a loving and supportive mother, was constantly giving of herself serving others, and had a great smile and friendly disposition. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Earline is survived by her daughter, Jill Johnson of Monmouth; son, Mark and Diane Sumner of Santa Clarita, Calif.; stepdaughter, Lori and Michael Gray of Ontario, Calif.; grandchildren, Jason and Sandi Johnson, Dan Johnson, Michael and Chris Sumner, Michelle and Tim Harkness; stepgrandchildren, Lauren, Cole, Michael, Thomas, and Douglas Gray; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Hunter, Scott, and Luke Johnson, Andrew, Mia, and Anthony Harkness; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Cadence and Jade Barstad, and Tyla Lovegrove.
