COOS BAY — Fresenius Medical Care North America, the nation's leading network of dialysis facilities, recently announced that Bay Area Hospital has contracted with FMCNA to provide in-hospital dialysis services to patients with chronic kidney disease.
FMCNA now operates an outpatient dialysis clinic in Coos Bay to serve patients who require the life-sustaining blood-filtering treatment three times weekly. Bay Area Hospital is now able to provide comprehensive inpatient dialysis treatments to existing hemodialysis patients, the only hospital providing inpatient dialysis care to Oregon's South Coast region.
To support this service, the hospital has installed a telemedicine system with a video and data link that allows a nephrologist to remotely monitor critical patient information and communicate with patients and their local physicians in real time during dialysis treatments. This telemedicine link provides real-time interaction between a nephrologist in Springfield and the physicians and FMCNA dialysis nurses at Bay Area Hospital.
'We take our community responsibilities seriously, and part of that is recognizing that health and healing are done better at home," said Dave Gorbutt, director of patient care at Bay Area Hospital. 'This new program allows more patients in our community to receive their healthcare here at home where their support systems are."
