NORTH BEND — Beginning in December, North Bend’s park restrooms will be closed at night.
The closures are a result of multiple accounts of vandalism and “inappropriate and disgusting behavior.”
“It’s forced us into a situation where for the public’s safety as well as for our own employee’s safety we’ll be closing the park restrooms at night,” North Bend City Manager Terence O’ Connor said.
The issue was discussed at North Bend City Council’s work session Monday night.
The bathrooms, which are currently open 24 hours a day, will most likely be locked at 6 p.m. and reopened at 7 a.m., according to O’ Connor.
He said the closures will go into effect as soon as the city puts metal doors on the facilities.
“Parks has indicated to us that over the last two years there’s been an increasing amount of damage and degradation,” O’Connor said, “It’s gotten to the point where now we need to do something.”
Some of the damage included fires, discarded needles and feces spread on the walls.
“Prior to this it was toilet paper getting stolen,” O’ Connor said, “Now it’s defacing things with bodily matter.”
