Ambulance crews rushed a Roseburg man and woman to the hospital Monday following a two-vehicle crash near Myrtle Point on state Highway 42.
At about 5:45 p.m., a westbound 2003 Toyota Matrix was near milepost 17.5 when it crossed the centerline and collided with an eastbound Ford F-250 pickup, an Oregon State Police press release said. Emergency workers had to use the jaws of life to get a passenger, Birdella S. Katzenberger, 48, out of the Toyota.
Katzenberger and the Toyota’s driver, Philip H. Locks, 55, where taken to Coquille Valley Hospital. Katzenberger was later flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center, RiverBend in Springfield, where a hospital spokeswoman said she remained in critical condition this morning. All three occupants of the Ford declined medical treatment.
Police said Locks failed field sobriety tests after being released from the hospital and was taken into custody. He is being referred to the Coos County district attorney on a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants.
