COOS BAY — A Coos Bay man was arrested Friday on weapons and menacing charges after allegedly firing a gun, according to a Coos County Sheriff's press release.
At about 1: 21 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 95000 black of Mattson Lane in Coos Bay for a verbal dispute. Deputies arrived and contacted all the parties involved. Deputies determined there was no crime committed and the issue was civil in nature and cleared the scene.
About four minutes later, there was a 911 call from the residence stating someone had pointed and fired a gun at someone. Deputies returned to the residence and contacted Jesse Ashcraft. Ashcraft told deputies after they left, Fred Shelton, 58, of Coos Bay, the property owner, pointed a rifle at him and fired it but did not strike him.
Deputies went to contact Shelton, who was on the front porch. Deputies observed a rifle inside the front door. Deputies ordered Shelton to stay where he was and show his hands. Shelton did not comply with these commands and fled back into the residence.
Deputies followed and after a brief struggle, were able to detain Shelton. Deputies discovered the rifle was actually a BB gun. Other witnesses on scene corroborated Jesse’s story. Shelton was booked on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and resisting arrest and taken to the Coos County Jail. He was lodged on $45,000.00 bail.
