COOS BAY — The Music Department of Southwestern Oregon Community College will present two Winter Concerts.
The first concert features Southwestern Oregon Community College Community Choir at Harmony United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay. That performance begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11.
Director David Aakre and the choir have put together a varied program which includes choral numbers by Ellingboe and Buxtehude, selections by the barbershop quartet, “The Accidental’s,” and classic vocal solos by Heather Williams. The choir will close the program with a medley of songs from “Phantom of the Opera,” arranged by Ed Lojeski. Accompanists for the program are Lynne Kuhn and Rhianna Haines.
The Vocal and Instrumental Jazz Ensembles will perform their Winter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the Hales Center for Performing Arts on the Southwestern campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
Cameron Jerde will lead the instrumentalists in some familiar jazz charts and improvisation.
The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ida Jo Gates, will perform a variety of a cappella and accompanied standards. “Here’s That Rainy Day” and “El la Macarenita” are two a cappella selections that were recently performed by eight members of the ensemble (aptly named SWOCTET) at the Bend A Cappella Jazz Festival. The remaining members of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will join the SWOCTET on these and other numbers such as “Sunny” and “On Broadway”.
The Music Department at Southwestern is grateful for any donations to the program, however, the concerts are free. The students and the directors hope that the community will come and enjoy these musical offerings.
