NORTH BEND — The 16th annual Coos Basin Salmon Derby is Sept. 12 and 13. A barbecue and silent auction will kick off the weekend at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at the North Bend Community Center, 2222 Broadway St. Auction items include guided and charter fishing trips, golf packages, lodging and restaurant certificates, Duck/Utah tickets, home and gardening items and even something for man's best friend. Tickets for the two-day derby are $20, with the kids 13 and under free with a paying adult. Advance tickets are at the Bite's On Bait and Tackle, Coos Bay Marine, Y Marina, England Marine and TnT Market.

Title sponsors are Douglas Timber Operators, K2Exports, The Coquille Tribe and Columbia Distributing. Dozens of other businesses and individuals supporting support the derby and the auction. This is the primary fundraising event for salmon enhancement and education programs in the Bay Area, providing much-needed funding for operational expenses, including utilities and insurance. Over the past 32 years, thousands of school children have participated in the educational activities. These salmon enhancement activities, as as the Morgan Creek Hatchery and Interpretive Center, are largely responsible for the rebound of the salmon fishery in our bay, an activity which generates millions to our local economy each year.
