MYRTLE POINT — Sports Editor John Gunther and I have been talking about going to the Spruce Street Bar & Grill in Myrtle Point for more than a month now.

It's just that the only time we got the car pointed in that direction recently, we ended up in Coquille.

That's OK, it was worth the wait ... and the drive.

Since we both listen to the same radio station while we drive, we've heard the radio spots for Spruce Street. They talk about their burgers and pizzas and their salads and wraps.

What they don't tell you is that their menu has all kinds of little interesting and delicious twists and turns.

Among their 10 selections of burgers, you can get a cheeseburger, or a bacon cheeseburger, but that's when the menu gets interesting. Among the others is one called the Dirty Cowboy, which is essentially a bacon cheeseburger and then you add grilled onions, sliced ham and barbecue sauce. Nice twist.

Then there's the Spruce Street's biggest burger, the Gut Robber. It comes with a beef patty, steak, bacon, ham, crisp bacon, onions, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, pepper jack cheese, and thousand island. It's hard enough to write all that, much less try to eat it.

John found one that had him both confused and intrigued, so he ordered it.

He's a fan of pineapple, so when he saw the Shaka burger, with a beef patty grilled in teriyaki sauce, then topped with provolone cheese, ham, pineapple, lettuce and tomato with a sweet, spicy sauce, it drew him in.

It kinds of sounded like a combination of a burger and a pizza. Which also is how I came to think about the sandwich that I ordered.

I got the My Uncle Sal, which had turkey, pepperoni, provolone, black olives, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickles and a creamy Italian dressing on a pub roll.

I also wondered how the pepperoni was going to play into this sandwich.

As we discussed our selections, Myrtle Point athlete Jack Isenhart strolled into the restaurant to pick up a couple of pizzas. He and John chatted about the upcoming basketball season as well as the track and field season in the spring.

As you can see from the pictures above, once again we were faced with the question of how to pick up our lunches, much less eat them.

The turkey on my sandwich was piled thick, which with all the topping made it quite the handful. John on the other hand could only look at his sandwich for a moment and wonder how he'd got himself into another fine mess with a huge burger.

"Another one I have to figure out how to pick it up," he said. And once he did, he didn't put it down.

"It definitely works," John said of the pineapple and teriyaki on a burger.

A few bites into my sandwich I really started to get all the Italian profiles in my sandwich. The pepperoni, provolone and olives really came through well. It actually tasted a little bit like a pizza. Quite a delicious surprise.

Owners Stacey and Melissa Murray have been at it at Spruce Street for eight years now. Stacey stopped by the table to chat for a moment while bringing us the tab and he told us that on Taco Night (75 cents) on Wednesdays that they do between 600 to 800 tacos.

I'm thinking I could do a lot of damage to a plate of tacos at 75 cents a pop.

Our tab for the Shaka burger ($10.25) and the Uncle Sal ($10.75) an iced tea and a Dr. Pepper came to $25.
