Gary and Merle (Benz) Forbes of Lakeside will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday.
Gary Forbes met Merle Benz in 1972, while he was stationed on the same ship in Alameda, Calif., as Merle’s brother. Gary saw her waiting on the pier and bet his buddy that he would marry her. Gary proposed on the same pier and they were wed on March 3, 1973.
Gary stayed in the Navy for more than 25 years, retiring as a senior chief. They were stationed in many places all over the world, and Merle was a homemaker and raised their three children.
The Forbes moved to the Bay Area 17 years ago and the couple are locally employed.
In their free time, The Forbes enjoy golfing and fishing together, as well as spending time with their son, Gary Jr., and daughter-in-law, Keeley Forbes, of Lapine; daughter, Rochelle, and son-in-law, Justin Sloan, of Seattle; daughter, Rebecca Forbes, of Coos Bay; and their five grandchildren: Allison, Garret, Sean, Amelia, and Lucas.
