Dec 17 — Otto Preminger’s 1952 thriller Angel Face

Angel Face is a film noir that started as an under-appreciated melodrama but later gained an almost cult-like status. Directed by Otto Preminger for RKO a year after he made the noir melodrama The Thirteenth Letter, Angel Face features a stunning portrayal by Jean Simmons and an understated and enjoyable performance by Robert Mitchum.  Beautiful Diane Tremayne (Simmons) is a sophisticated, wealthy young woman capable of manipulating anyone who crosses her path. She also has a dark side she manages to conceal behind her appearance and her good manners. Soon after the untimely death of her stepmother (Barbara O'Neil), Diane pursues handsome Frank Jessup (Mitchum). Before long, she starts to win him over -- but Frank quickly suspects that the manic Diane had more to do with her stepmother's death than she lets on.  When he shows signs of pulling away, Diane schemes to get him in so deep he'll never get out.
