Strengthening families workshops

This free workshop, sponsored by SWOCC, is for parents and young teens together (ages 9-14). It will focus on how to communicate effectively with one another and set appropriate limits. A free, healthy dinner will be provided. Limited child care will be available for siblings 0 to 8. Sessions will focus on: communication skills, building bridges and family meetings; dealing with peer pressure and protecting against substance abuse; and family fun and communication activities. Career/college fair

The Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon will host a Career and College Expo 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 19 for fifth-12th graders from Coos and Curry counties. There will be a keynote speaker and five breakout sessions on:

  • How to fill out job applications
  • Career interview skills and appropriate dress
  • College admissions process
  • Paying for college
  • Fields of study

Young Authors' Tea

The Driftwood Reading Council of Oregon Reading Association and Friends of the Coos Bay Library present the ninth annual Young Authors' Tea: 1-2:30 p.m. April 26. Pre-K through high school entries are accepted. Submit entries to Madison School, Attn. Michelle Newsum, 400 Madison St., Coos Bay, OR 97420, or michellen@coos-bay.k12.or.us. Include the child's name, school, grade and teacher (If you're not a CBSD employee, include your email). Deadline: April 24.

Bay Area Teen Idol auditions

Bay Area Teen Idol is a vocal competition for Coos County and western Douglas County teens ages 13-18. For more information, call 541-294-2276 or click here.

Auditions will be in the Coos Bay Fire Department's conference room, 450 Elrod Ave.:

  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 5
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 6
  • 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 8
  • 10 a.m.-noon May 10

Students should prepare to sign a capella and with karaoke. They do not need to be the same song, but karaoke must be free of lyrics from the original artist. Karaoke should be provided on a CD, thumb drive, iPod, MP3 player or smartphone.

Students should also bring entry and consent forms filled out and signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Vet med

OSU College of Veterinary Medicine summer camp for tenth- and eleventh-graders will take place Aug. 17-22. The camp accepts 16 students with eight scholarships available for high-need students. Application here; available until May 15.

Girl Scouts summer day camp

Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington invites you to join the excitement at Day Camp Explore. Spend four fun-filled days making new friends as you learn about our local forests, build a wooden birdhouse, count the rings of a tree, and enjoy many more activities and games. Camp will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 23-26 at Millicoma. It's open to girls completing grades K-5. Cost: $30 for registered Girl Scouts or $45 for girls new to Girl Scouts (cost includes Girl Scout membership through Sept. 30). Deadline to register: June 9.
