Halloween is almost here, and is anticipated to be more popular than ever this year, with a record high of 179 million Americans celebrating according to the National Retail Federation. What are the favorite costumes? Well, that same survey says the most popular costume for adults is a witch, and, for dogs, it’s a pumpkin. The top costume for kids is a superhero.
Besides the parties and costumes, there’s always plenty of candy – a surefire favorite of all ages. But, there is often much more candy than should probably be consumed accumulated by the end of a night of family trick or treating.
Did you know that you can donate those candies to real heros, our Deployed Troops and First Responders? It is a great lesson for children in charity and patriotism, and might even prevent a visit to the dentist! Last year, Operation Gratitude donated hundreds of thousands of pounds of candy to our troops through its Halloween Candy GIVE-Back. To donate candy, go to http://signup.operationgratitude.com/halloween-candy-give-back-map and enter your zip code to find a participating drop-off site near you.
(Toneata Morgan, Miss Oregon USA 2018, will represent the state at the national Miss USA pageant next spring.)
Editor's note: On Wednesday, Nov. 1, Above Dental, 2070 Virginia Ave, North Bend, will be buying candy back for $1 per pound between 2 and 4 p.m. They will then send the candy to Operation Gratitude, who will send it to troops who are overseas. The child who brings the most candy will win $150, and $150 to a charity of their choice. For more information, call Above Dental at 541-756-0155.
