BROOKINGS - Oregon Community College wants to help people get the education and training they need to be successful in their career.

Nursing students and staff will come together for a nursing panel discussion and CNA 1/CNA 2 information session. This will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Curry Campus in Brookings. All interested are invited to attend to listen and bring any questions they may have.

Southwestern has staff available who work one-on-one with students to help them take the prerequisite courses and get training in the healthcare field, such as training to become a CNA 1 or a CNA 2. In February Southwestern will start accepting applications from students for the nursing program. Students need to meet with an adviser at least a year before applying so they can familiarize themselves with the competitive process and complete their prerequisites. There is a Curry cohort starting even-numbered years with minimal travel to Coos Bay. In odd-numbered years students are admitted to a Coos cohort with weekly travel to Coos Bay for class and clinical training.

The application for the CNA I course is due Dec. 5 for the winter course that begins Jan. 8, 2018, though Southwestern may consider applications after that date. Those interested in this course are encouraged to attend this event as well as to schedule an appointment to discuss the application process with Jana King by calling 541-813-1667. Students can also schedule an appointment with a financial aid representative to determine their eligibility for assistance to cover the cost of tuition for the course.

Scholarship assistance for the CNA 1 and CNA 2 training is available for residents of Gold Beach and Port Orford through the Candy Cronberger Memorial Health Fund through the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation. These funds can assist with tuition, course and other fees, uniforms and supplies, along with immunizations and licensing fees and other expenses. For those unable to travel to Brookings, or only interested in CNA-related information, the Gold Beach Center of Southwestern will host a CNA 1 and CNA 2 information session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28. The Gold Beach Center is located on the Curry County Fairgrounds in Gold Beach.
