COOS BAY — The 2017 Sea of Quilts XXIII show by Coos Sand 'n Sea Quilters Guild will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, on the lower level of the Boys & Girls Club of SW Oregon, 3333 Walnut Ave., Coos Bay. Admission is $5 and free to those 12 and under.

The guild welcomes the public to meet the 2017 featured quilter Melinda Andrews of Myrtle Point and to see a display of her quilts and quilted items.

As a youngster Andrews started sewing out of necessity and hated everything about garment sewing. In 1998 she caught the “bug” from her girlfriend’s mother, Dixie Tanner. She borrowed a pattern and had the top pieced in a week. It took her a little longer to hand quilt it. Her first quilt, “Imperfection Inspection,” will be displayed at the quilt show. She enjoys appliqué, embroidery, designing her own quilt patterns and machine quilting all of her own work. Her favorite part of quilting is sharing her passion with anyone that will listen, road trips and retreats with her quilting buddies. She will serve as president of the guild in 2017-18. When she is not quilting, she can be found on jeep excursions with her husband.

The quilt show will feature over 200 quilts and/or quilted items, free hourly demonstrations, a vendor mall and a member boutique. Attendees can vote for their favorite quilts on Saturday with award ribbons presented on Sunday. The drawing for the raffle quilt will be at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, and the winner does not need to be present to win. Money raised by the show helps to fund community service projects of the guild and other groups for donation quilts to local Palliative Hospice Care and hospitalized infants and children.

Coos Sand 'n Sea Quilters meet at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of every month (September-June) at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. Various monthly programs are offered. The guild welcomes new members and is open to anyone with an interest in quilting or with any level of expertise from beginning to experienced quilters.
