BANDON - Bandon Showcase presents the Martha Redbone Roots Project at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, March 4, at the Sprague Community Theater.
Redbone is one of the most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi-award winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and country sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn.
With her gospel singing father’s voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Choctaw mother’s culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana.
Her latest CD, "The Garden of Love - Songs of William Blake," produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder and Grammy winner John McEuen is an unexpected twist – “a brilliant collision of cultures (New Yorker). Martha's magnificent voice, Blake’s immortal words and a masterful cornucopia of roots music… folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Native."
Currently, Redbone is developing "Bone Hill," a musical theater piece based on the stories of her Appalachian mining family’s heritage and history. In the piece, Redbone travels back in time to her own childhood and beyond into the memories and tales of her Cherokee ancestors, revealing an untold American story that fueled a wide range of American music.
Alongside her career as a recording artist and songwriter, Redbone has maintained a steady involvement with causes she believes in, utilizing her celebrity in Indian Country for fundraising and leadership, especially involving youth.
In addition, Redbone is the indigenous affairs consultant and creative adviser to the Man Up Campaign, the new global youth movement to eradicate violence against women and girls.
Bandon Showcase is committed to providing diverse and unique musical experiences for youth, which is why this concert includes a free student outreach event.
