BANDON — Calling all wine enthusiasts who crave more knowledge about wine. The invitation is out to join fellow wine lovers in the annual celebration of "the new wine" of the 2017 season.

In France, the "new wine" celebration has a focus around a familiar well-known wine, beaujolais.

Beaujolais wines are rather humble in origins and remain low man on wine lists in French restaurants. But on the third Thursday in November the minor player beaujolais becomes the King of Wines.

The game is simple and the rules straight forward: No one anywhere on planet earth shall drink even a taste of the Beaujolais Nouveau until one minute after midnight on (this year) Nov. 16. This is French law!

Google Beaujolais Nouveau. The history and ongoing story about this worldwide celebration is fascinating. And the wine is worth trying.

To learn more about beaujolais wine and do research by sampling some other fine wines, all are invited to attend an open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, at Bread & Wine and the Hickory Club, located at 340 and 350 Second St. in Old Town Bandon.

Guest wine experts will be pouring samples of vintage French Beaujolais plus the Nouveau of 2017. The world famous French winery Joseph Drouhin label Beaujolais Nouveau will be offered with food pairings with a holiday theme.

Oregon wine buffs will be delighted to know a few of Oregon local wineries have taken up the challenge to present an Oregon Pinot Nouveau, offered on the traditional French Nouveau day, the third Thursday in November. Sampling of an Oregon Nouveau will be by Brandborg Winery, voted Oregon's best winery in 2015, located close by in Elkton. Brandborg's Pinot Nouveau will be a revelation of things to come for their 2017 harvest, and all will be explained by Brandborg guest pourer at the open house.

"We have celebrated Beaujolais Nouveau Day every November for many years at my store," said Nancy Evans, hostess for the wine event. "It is always fun but we are taking wine tasting to the next level this year. I'm so glad we have our two wine experts to teach us new things about wine. And to have such special world-class wines to share is going to make the evening very special.

"If you are coming to join our party, I suggest you make a reservation at your favorite Bandon restaurant to have dinner afterwards. Make an evening out of it!" Evans added. "Cheers!"

Wine and food pairing is complimentary by hosts Bread & Wine and the Hickory Club (next door to the Bandon Visitor Center in Old Town).
