COOS BAY - The South Coast Striders invites the public to a hike on the Bastendorff Bog starting at 10 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 7. The hike will start in the Sunset Bay day use area. The hike will go from from there, cross Cape Arago Highway, go through the campground and follow the bog trail out to Yoakam Point, which will provide an excellent view of Cape Arago Lighthouse and a mystery feature.
Hikers will all then return to the starting point and those wanting a longer hike will continue hiking along the coast to Shore Acres and back. Hikers will see some great ocean views and interesting trees along the way. The short hike (to Yoakam Point and back) will end shortly after noon. Those opting for the longer option can count on an additional two hours. Hikers will stop for lunch at the Sunset Bay day use area.
Be prepared for any weather conditions with foul weather gear, food and water. The hike is rated moderate, with 4-5 mostly flat miles.
Meet at 10 a.m. at the Sunset Bay day use parking lot near the volleyball courts and restrooms at the south end of the bay. Suggested carpool sites and departure times:
• Coos Bay Visitor Center 8:15 a.m.,
• Ray's Food Place in Bandon — 8 a.m.
• Coquille Visitor Center — 8 a.m.,
• Dune Information Center in Reedsport — 7:40 a.m
