Gold Beach finished the regular season on a winning note, but Reedsport was optimistic about the future after keeping the score close against the Panthers until the fourth quarter.
Gold Beach scored twice in the final 12 minutes to beat the host Braves 25-7 on Friday and keep momentum for the playoffs.
Gold Beach will host Willamina in a first-round Class 3A game next weekend.
The Panthers got a 6-yard touchdown run by Travis Wood and a 43-yard field goal by Todd Martin to take a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Braves scored on the final play of the half when Tyler Strowbridge connected with Cory Christoffersen for an 80-yard catch and run.
In the final quarter, Gold Beach got a rushing touchdown by Hugo Rosa and a 44-yard scoring pass from Josh Busko to Richard Wallace.
Reedsport coach Shane Nelson was thrilled with how his team finished the season.
“We played a really good game,” he said. “I thought our kids were inspired.”
He added that the Braves aspire to be the type of program Gold Beach has under coach Kevin Swift.
“They’re well-coached,” he said. “He’s got his system down.”
Nelson thinks this season was a good start, even though the Braves didn’t get a league win. They were in nearly every game at halftime before losing late.
“The kids played tough,” he said. “They had a lot of bad breaks. They were working with a new coach, a new staff, a new philosophy.
“The most important thing to me is these guys really bought in. They changed the way we play. They played hard. They played with pride and sportsmanship. And they did it the right way. They really set the foundation for the future.”
Devils top Chieftains
Coquille finished off its season with a 39-6 win over host Rogue River. The Red Devils finished at 4-3 and fourth place in the Sunset Conference, and just barely out of the playoffs.
Joe Harris led the offense with nine rushes for 190 yards. He scored from 52 yards, 40 and 44 yards. Shawn Maddox recovered a fumble in the second quarter, returning it for a touchdown from 20 yards out.
Heston Altenbach scored on a 10-yard rush, and aired it out to Ryan Dannels for a 41-yard score. Altenbach finished the game passing 3 of 12 for 64 yards.
“We had a really good night on offense,” Coquille coach David Thomason said. “We played a heck of a game. I’m real, real happy with our win.”
Thomason said the defense played well, too, and “picked up the slack, but there wasn’t much slack to pick up.”
Challengers shut out MP
Cascade Christian stayed perfect with a 40-0 win over host Myrtle Point.
Cascade Christian’s quarterback Jake Gettman completed three passes, all for touchdowns from 56 yards, 10 yards and 64 yards.
The Bobcats finished 2-5.
Glide beats Bandon
Glide tuned up for the playoffs with a 45-25 win over host Bandon on Friday.
The Wildcats finished alone in third place at 5-2, while Bandon finished 1-6.
No other details of the game were available Friday night.
Skyline League
Gilchrist tops Powers
Gilchrist beat host Powers 58-14, dropping the Cruisers to 3-5 on the season. Gilchrist improved to 6-2 and will face St. Paul in the Class 1Aplayoffs.
George Lewis and Justin Flatt each threw touchdown passes to Cameron Perreault for Powers, but the Cruisers couldn’t stop Gilchrist’s running game.
“We gave up some big runs on defense and a big kick return at the end of the first half with no time remaining,” said Powers coach Nick Gonzales.
Ryan Stinson scored five of the eight touchdowns for the Grizzlies.
“All in all I feel the boys had a much better season this year,” Gonzales said. “We still have a long ways to go and the boys are already talking about making sure it gets done in the offseason.”
Far West League
Sutherlin nabs No. 2 seed
Nick Bradley rushed for 297 yards and five touchdowns to lead Sutherlin to a 48-33 win over host Siuslaw that gave the Bulldogs the Far West League’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Siuslaw will enter the playoffs as the No. 3 seed and visit Scappoose in a first-round game next week.
Bradley scored on runs of 27, 44, 53, 75 and 53 yards for Sutherlin, which led 14-0 after the first quarter and never let the Vikings catch up.
Sonny Tupua had 148 yards rushing and scored twice for the Vikings and quarterback John Johnson had touchdown passes to Eric Tippler and Trevor Roberts and also scored on a touchdown run.
Sutherlin has a first-round bye and then is on the road against Henley.
Trojans perfect
Douglas beat South Umpqua on the road 33-0 to finish off its undefeated regular season.
Paul Polamalu had 174 yards, passing 7 of 12 with one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown. Jered Stoffal ran for 75 yards, three touchdowns and brought down two interceptions. Ricky Cortes also had two interceptions.
The Trojans finished 5-0 in the Far West League, and have a first round bye.
