The Sunset girls cross country team raced to the Far West League middle school district title last weekend at Tugman State Park.
Shaylen Crook led the way with a first-place finish as Sunset had five of the first eight runners across the finish line.
Crook was timed in 12 minutes, 45 seconds for the 3,000-meter course, winning for the sixth time in seven races this fall. Teammate Katelyn Rossback was second in 13:04, with Sunset’s Isabel Groth fifth, Breanna Wright seventh and Natalie Hill eighth.
The Dolphins scored 21 points, with Siuslaw a distant second at 74 and Harbor Lights third at 75.
The rest of the top 10 included Hailey Iverson of Harbor Lights third, Katelyn Wells of Siuslaw fourth, Bennett Wahl of Driftwood sixth, Serena Erler of Coquille ninth and Mikena Shay of North Bend 10th.
The boys race was dominated by Siuslaw’s Mitchell Butler, who won by more than a minute in 10:15.
Butler repeated as district champion with nearly the same time as last year. He has not lost a regular local cross country meet in the past two seasons, though he was 14th at last year’s Regional Junior Olympics Championships.
At the district meet, Siuslaw teammate Mack Marbas was second, with Seth Campbell fourth.
Siuslaw finished with 39 points, 12 better than Riley Creek.
The rest of the top 10 individuals were Coquille’s Thom Hallmark in third, Riley Creek’s Garrett Litterell in fifth, Sunset’s Luke Riley in sixth, Brandon Austin of Harbor Lights in seventh, Nick Hossley of North Bend in eighth, Riley Creek’s Colton Pierson in ninth and Sunset’s Andrew Reichenberger in 10th.
Some of the same runners will compete today in a meet at Bullards Beach State Park, while others will go to the Middle School State Championships.
Complete results from the district meet are listed in today’s Community Scoreboard.
